Rajasthani Folk Music and Dance: Ghoomar, Kalbeliya and Desert Songs

A traveller’s introduction to the sounds and steps you might meet across Rajasthan.

Music runs through Rajasthani life, from weddings and fairs to quiet evenings by the fire. Here is a short guide for curious visitors.

Dance

  • Ghoomar: a graceful twirling dance performed by women in long, colourful skirts.
  • Kalbeliya: a fast, sinuous dance associated with a traditional community, recognised internationally.
  • Gair: a group dance with sticks, common in the Marwar and Mewar regions.

Music and instruments

Look out for the dholak drum, the khartal clappers, the morchang and the bowed kamaicha. Folk singers, often from hereditary communities, carry stories of heroes and desert life in their songs.

How to enjoy it

Evening performances at heritage hotels in bigger towns are polished, while a village wedding or festival is more spontaneous. Be respectful, ask before filming and tip performers fairly. Bera’s own evenings are quieter, but our team can suggest places and ideas.
