Jawai Leopard Safari

Granite hills, open jeeps and local trackers who know every rock.

Our safaris

Tracking leopards the patient way

Jawai's leopards do not hide in dense forest. They rest on and inside great granite domes, and the land tells you where they are: a langur barking from a ridge, a peacock's sharp alarm call, fresh pugmarks in a sandy riverbed. Our trackers read each sign, position the jeep quietly, switch off the engine and wait.

Drives run twice a day, in the morning from about 6 to 9 AM and in the evening from about 4 to 7 PM, when leopards are most often out on the rocks. A sighting is never guaranteed, but over a two or three day stay the chances are very good.

Respect for the wild

How we watch wildlife

Jawai works because people and leopards have shared these hills for generations. We keep it that way.

  • We never block an animal's path or crowd a sighting
  • No calls, baiting or chasing, ever
  • Engines off while we watch, from a respectful distance
  • Small groups and no convoys
  • We leave before an animal is disturbed
  • Local trackers and village families benefit directly

Safari tips

Make the most of it

Go early or late

Leopards are most active at dawn and dusk, and the light is best for photos.

Wear earthy colours

Khaki, olive and stone shades, with warm layers for winter mornings (dawn can be 8–12°C), a hat and closed shoes.

Bring a zoom lens

A 70–200 mm or 100–400 mm lens suits most sightings. We carry beanbags.

Stay seated, keep quiet

Follow your tracker, keep voices low and never leave the jeep. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Carry water & sunscreen

Dusty tracks and strong sun, bring water, a scarf and sunscreen.

Book 3–4 drives

Morning and evening over two days gives a fair chance of excellent sightings. Winter weekends fill quickly.
