Photographers and birders have recorded a wide range of species around the dam and the hills. This list is a starting point.
Winter visitors (about November to March)
- Greater flamingo, Eurasian spoonbill and ducks such as garganey and ruddy shelduck.
- Waders such as black-winged stilts on the shoreline.
- Large water birds such as the Asian woolly-necked stork and, with luck, the sarus crane.
Residents all year
- Indian peafowl on rocks and in fields.
- Hoopoe, green bee-eater and Indian robin near scrub and wires.
- Shrikes, babblers, bulbuls and doves around the villages.
- Brown rock chat and francolins on the hills.
Tips
Bring binoculars, a field guide or an app such as Merlin or eBird, and go early. The dam shore at dawn is usually the busiest time. Our birdwatching guide has more.
