Birdwatching in Jawai: Species, Seasons and Hotspots

When to go, where to look and what you might see on a birding morning at Jawai.

28 September 2026 · 3 min read

With the Jawai Dam, scrubby farmland and rocky hills in one landscape, the region attracts an impressive variety of birds. More than three hundred species have been recorded around Jawai.

Best season

November to February is the peak, when migratory waterbirds arrive. March to June is good for raptors and dry-country species; the monsoon brings breeding activity and green scenery.

Species you may find

  • Waterbirds: flamingos, painted stork, spoonbill, bar-headed goose, ducks and waders.
  • Cranes: demoiselle cranes in some winters.
  • Raptors: eagles, kites, harriers and shikra circling over the hills.
  • Hill and scrub birds: owls, peafowl, bee-eaters, rock-loving species and many more.

How to bird at Jawai

  1. Start at sunrise when birds are most active.
  2. Drive slowly along the dam edge and stop often.
  3. Use a spotting scope or binoculars; do not walk toward water because of crocodiles.
  4. Keep a checklist; you will be surprised how many you tally.

The best birding spots and times

The dam shoreline is the main draw, with mudflats and shallows that attract waders and ducks, especially in winter. The scrub on the hills hosts shrikes, babblers and chats, while farm edges bring doves, bee-eaters and peafowl. Birding is best at first light and in the late afternoon, when birds are most active and the light is soft.

What you need

  • Binoculars (8x42 is a good all-round choice).
  • A bird guide or apps such as Merlin and eBird.
  • A hat, water and layers for cold mornings.
  • A notebook or phone to log what you see.
  • Patience and quiet.

Combining birds with a leopard trip

A dawn drive often passes birds on the way, and a stop at the dam is easy to fit before breakfast. Ask your tracker to point out calls and plumage. Winter months from November to February give the longest species lists. For photographers, see best camera and lens for Jawai.
