Morning or Evening Safari in Jawai: Which Is Better?

Both drives have their own light, mood and wildlife. Here is how to choose between a Jawai morning safari and an evening safari, or do both.

Almost every guest asks the same thing before booking a Jawai leopard safari: should we go in the morning or in the evening? The honest answer is that neither is “better” for everyone. They feel different, and the best plan for most travellers is to try both.

How the two drives are timed

Safaris run at the two cooler ends of the day. A morning drive usually starts around first light, roughly 6:00 AM, and an evening drive starts around 4:00 PM. Each lasts about three hours. Exact timings shift with the season and sunrise and sunset, so confirm them when you book.

The morning safari

  • Light: soft, golden light on the granite hills, with long shadows and often a mist over the fields in winter.
  • Mood: quiet and unhurried. Villages are just waking up, herders are leaving with their flocks and the birds are loud.
  • Wildlife: leopards that spent the night moving or hunting are often heading back to their rocks and caves, so you may find them on open boulders or walking a ridge.
  • Weather: cool or cold from November to February, so bring layers. In summer it is the most comfortable drive of the day.

The evening safari

  • Light: warm, low sun that turns the granite orange and pink. Good for landscape pictures with a leopard small in the frame.
  • Mood: relaxed. Many guests finish with a quiet sundowner moment on a viewpoint over the dam or the hills.
  • Wildlife: leopards stir as the rocks cool. Sightings can be excellent, and you may also see jackals, peafowl and birds heading to roost.
  • Weather: pleasantly warm in winter, hot at the start in summer.

Which should you choose?

  • Only one drive: choose the morning if you dislike heat or want the quietest mood. Choose the evening if you are not an early riser.
  • Photographers: book both. Morning and evening light are very different, and a second drive improves your chances.
  • Families with young children or older travellers: the evening is often easier, because there is no pre-dawn start.
  • Short trips: one evening plus the next morning fits neatly into a two-night stay.

A note on sightings

Jawai’s leopards live in the wild and no operator can promise a sighting on a particular drive. Local trackers read pugmarks, alarm calls and fresh signs to give you the best chance. Several drives raise your odds more than choosing the “perfect” hour. Our complete safari guide explains what to expect, and you can request a safari for the slot you prefer.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the Jawai morning safari start?

Morning drives usually begin around first light, roughly 6:00 AM, and last about three hours. Timings shift with the season, so confirm them when you book.

Can I do both a morning and an evening safari on the same day?

Yes. Many guests do both. Plan a rest at the hotel in the middle of the day, especially in summer, and carry water and snacks.

Is the evening safari good for photography?

Yes. Low, warm light makes the granite glow and gives good landscape pictures. Morning light is softer and cooler, so photographers often book both.
