Marsh Crocodiles and Wetland Life at the Jawai Dam

Beyond leopards, the Jawai reservoir supports crocodiles, fish and thousands of birds.

2 October 2026 · 2 min read

Jawai Dam is often described as one of the larger reservoirs in western Rajasthan. Around it you may find far more than leopards.

Crocodiles

Marsh crocodiles, also called muggers, are known to live around the reservoir. They bask on sandbars and rocks on warm days. They are best watched from a distance with binoculars.

Other wildlife

Fish support kingfishers and herons, and the shoreline attracts waders and ducks, especially from November to March. See birdwatching in Jawai and Jawai Dam history.

Watching safely

  • Stay well back from the water’s edge.
  • Do not swim, wade or let children play at the shore.
  • Never feed or tease animals.
  • Follow your driver’s advice about where to stop.
